Dan McMillan: Rediscovering the Game

February 3, 2026

Dan McMillan’s journey to representing New Zealand is one defined by change, rediscovery, and a renewed love for the sport.

Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Dan first arrived in New Zealand in 2023 with plans to visit family and travel. What began as a short stay quickly became something far more meaningful.

“I came to New Zealand in 2023 to visit family and work while travelling the country. I wasn't playing badminton and had been on and off but when I came to New Zealand I refound my love for the sport and that trip is what has driven me to still be playing to this day. And the sun's a nice bonus.”

That rediscovered passion played a major role in his decision to stay and fully recommit to badminton.

“I moved because work was taking over and I couldn't balance training and competing with my work, so I made the move so I could focus more on playing and becoming the best I can be.”

After initially spending time in Waikato, Dan eventually based himself in Auckland, drawn by the training environment and competitive standards.

“When I came to New Zealand before, all I heard were talks about how good Auckland Badminton was. How they are and always have been one of the top associations, and when I'm training to become the best that's the type of environment I need. And I haven't regretted it one bit.”

Exposure to different environments has played an important role in shaping his development.

“Every coach and every player is different, but everyone can learn something new. I like seeing different ways of training, playing shots, and different mindsets, and then I can choose and apply what works for me.”

Since settling into the New Zealand badminton scene, Dan has made a strong impact domestically, including a standout performance at the NZ Tour Finals.

“When I moved I had two main goals for 2025, and one of those was qualifying for all three events at Tour Finals. I didn't expect to win a title but it showed me that all the work I'd been putting in wasn't for nothing. I was super happy when I won, and the cheesecake after to celebrate was amazing too.”

Dan’s success on the national stage brought a drive to aspire to bigger goals as Dan’s selection for the VICTOR Oceania Team Championships marks a significant milestone in his journey.

“My second goal for 2025 when I moved was to be selected for the Oceania Team. I was hesitant to voice this one when I moved to other players, I thought maybe it was unrealistic at first. Seeing how far I've come already I shouldn't have had any doubt. I was always asked if I'd rather represent England or New Zealand and the answer was always New Zealand. I'm super proud to be representing my country and to wear McMillan on my back.”

Looking ahead, Dan is ready to take on greater challenges as the VICTOR Oceania Championships draw closer.

“I'm looking forward to playing some of the best Oceania has to offer, and seeing how much more I need to improve. It's been a while since I've played a tournament now, I can't wait. The team event will be amazing… excited to be a part of a team.”

With his success on the rise, Dan is quick to acknowledge those who have supported him along the way.

“I would really like to thank my parents for their support, Auckland Badminton for their help with giving me work, training and a lot of support as well. Everyone I've trained with and been coached by here and everyone that has believed in me, whether that's here or in England. This is as much for them as it is for me, proving we were all right and I could do it.”

As Dan continues to settle into life and training in New Zealand, his journey reflects the importance of finding balance, support, and renewed purpose through the sport. With his passion for badminton clearly reignited and strong performances already under his belt, Dan is focused on continuing to learn, improve, and challenge himself at the next level. We look forward to seeing Dan compete at the upcoming VICTOR Oceania Team Championships and following the next chapter of his journey representing New Zealand on court.
