New Zealand Para Badminton Team – Road to Bahrain 2026
With the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2026 approaching, New Zealand’s para badminton players are deep into preparation as they get ready to compete on the world stage in Bahrain. For many, this journey has been shaped by consistent training, strong support networks, and a genuine love for the sport.
Across the squad, preparation looks different for each athlete, but the shared commitment is clear. Here are glimpses of what our para athletes are doing during their preparation phase for the world championships.
Building Consistency On and Off Court
For Andrew Fairweather, preparation has been about balance and structure, making sure both training and recovery are prioritised. On top of coaching sessions on court, with a mixture of individual and group coaching, he makes sure to cover other aspects of training to ensure balance.
“I have also been going to the gym 3 times a week focusing on strength and cardio. Off court I have been making sure my nutrition and recovery is on point.”
Rishikesh Venu has focused on lifting his level through international exposure and intensity.
“very well with overseas training and increased training intensity”
For Thomas Slade, preparation has come alongside a major lifestyle shift, embracing a high-performance environment overseas.
“I moved to Japan last year. For a country obsessed with badminton, the environment and standard is incredible.”
Maia Read has taken a consistent approach, building confidence through repetition and technical development.
“I have been training three times a week, two hours each session, working on technique and fitness.”
Finding Joy in the Training Process
While the road to a World Championships can be demanding, the players continue to find enjoyment in the day-to-day work and small moments of progress.
For Rishikesh Venu, it’s the fundamentals that bring the most satisfaction.
“Clearing and defensive shots”
Thomas Slade embraces the physical challenge of training.
“Gassing out. I`m a sucker for punishment. I love pushing my body.”
Maia Read enjoys the learning process and tactical side of the game.
“Learning new tactics and techniques.”
For Amy Dunn, joy comes from the moments when hard work starts to click.
“I love learning and figuring things out - I love the moment when everything times into place and the shot you've been practicing goes well, such a satisfying moment.”
Inspiration Behind the Effort
Inspiration plays a key role in keeping motivation high, especially during tough training blocks.
Rishikesh draws inspiration from those closest to him.
“My coach Dhanny Oud and Duncan Yeow”
For Thomas, family has been a constant driving force.
“My family. My parents are older now but they are still training and working hard every day.”
Maia looks to the people she’s met through the sport.
“The players that I have had the chance to meet and learn from.”
Looking Ahead to Bahrain
As the team prepares for Bahrain, there is a strong sense of pride and gratitude across the group. The opportunity to compete at a World Championships is not taken lightly, and each athlete is embracing the journey in their own way.
With preparation well underway and support from coaches, teammates, and Badminton Oceania, the New Zealand Para Badminton team is focused, motivated, and excited for what lies ahead. We look forward to seeing them represent New Zealand on the world stage at the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2026.
