Dylan Soedjasa: Staying Passionate Over Time

February 5, 2026

For Dylan Soedjasa, longevity in badminton has come down to enjoyment, adaptability, and a constant desire to keep improving.

When asked what continues to motivate him after years of competing at the highest level, Dylan keeps it simple, saying that he continues to play because he enjoys the sport and getting better at it.

Looking back on experiences such as the Tokyo World Championships and Thomas Cup campaigns, Dylan has had the opportunity to compete against some of the biggest names in badminton. Reflecting on those moments, he shared what has stood out most to him.

“10 years ago I was fortunate enough to be apart of the Kiwi team that qualified for Thomas cup (Men’s team World Championships). Notably, I got to compete against Viktor Axelsen, CTC and other incredibly talented players who I would look up to. That experience really opened my eyes to the highest level of competition and motivated me to get better. I enjoy competing at the highest level I’m capable of and seeing improvements in my game still motivates me to this day.”

Since 2017, Dylan has consistently shown an ability to adapt across both singles and doubles, working with a range of partners while remaining competitive at the highest level. That year, he reached the final of the Oceania Championships in mixed doubles alongside Susannah Leydon-Davis, while also finishing as a finalist in the men’s singles event.

More recently, Dylan claimed the 2025 Oceania Men’s Doubles title with Adam Jeffrey and played a key role in the team event, where he was scratch paired with Raphael Deloy against Australia. Being able to adjust quickly to different partners and situations has been a constant throughout his career — something he credits to communication and understanding how to complement each other’s strengths.

“Playing with different partners can take time to get used to their style of play. I try to keep an open mind and be flexible to adapt my game to help strengthen the team. I also think of ways that help strengthen my partner, by setting up shots for them to attack or playing shots that don’t get them under pressure. When i’m down in a match, and things aren’t going to plan, I try to keep communicating and encouraging my partner so that we can turn things around.”

As badminton has evolved, so too have training methods and preparation. When asked what has helped him stay competitive over the years, Dylan pointed to both on- and off-court development.

“In the last 5 years I have been more consistent in the gym which has really helped with my performance on court. I attribute a lot of my strength gains to my Strength & Conditioning coach Spencer from Precision fitness. I now understand how important gym and a great coach is.
On court wise, I have been fortunate enough to have experience different training styles in Europe and Asia. Changing the styles of training has helped keep training interesting and mixing different styles seems to work best for me.”

Despite already achieving significant milestones, Dylan remains motivated by finding enjoyment in refining his game and focusing on improving the smaller details.

Known for stepping up in tight matches, Dylan approaches high-pressure moments by keeping things simple.

“I try to remember that it’s just a game and bring it back to enjoying playing.”

As the VICTOR Oceania Men’s Team Championships approaches, Dylan reflects on the current team environment and the energy surrounding this year’s campaign.

“Every team is different and I think everyone has brought a really good energy to this team.”

For younger players looking to build long and sustainable careers in badminton, Dylan’s advice is straightforward.

“Have fun and enjoy the process. We shouldn’t forget why we started playing in the first place.”

Dylan also expressed his gratitude for the support he has received along the way.

“I’m very grateful for Yonex Badminton Australia New Zealand for providing me with the best equipment. Big thanks to Spencer at Precision Fitness for keeping me strong and healthy.”

As Dylan continues his journey in badminton, his longevity in the sport reflects his ability to adapt, stay curious, and most importantly, enjoy the process. With years of experience at the highest level and a mindset focused on continuous improvement, we look forward to seeing him bring his experience, leadership, and passion into the upcoming VICTOR Oceania Team Championships.
