Following discussions with School Sport New Zealand, Badminton New Zealand has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 New Zealand Secondary School Badminton Championships. The cancellation provides schools the opportunity to refocus on local and regional competition.
Badminton New Zealand encourages and supports Association’s and the RSD network to investigate the possibility of delivering regionally specific badminton events for schools. Note that Badminton New Zealand is committed to delivering the three Regional Junior Secondary School Badminton Championships from 24th to 26th November 2020 in Tauranga, Wellington, and Christchurch.
The decision to cancel the Championships, will heavily impact the Badminton New Zealand calendar, specifically the New Zealand Tertiary Championships and New Zealand National Masters Championships. Badminton New Zealand is working with University & Tertiary Sport New Zealand to identify an alternate date and venue for the National Tertiary Championships. Both organisations are confident of strong entries once a decision is finalised. We anticipate an announcement on a revised date and venue in late June.
Finally, we can confirm that the New Zealand National Masters Championships will be moved to Badminton Waitakere with the competition dates to remain as 27 to 29 August 2020. While we acknowledge this will be disappointing for Wellington based players, we are confident that players will enjoy a strong Waitakere welcome at this year’s Championships.
