Yanxi Liu: Growing Through Opportunity

February 2, 2026

For Yanxi Liu, her badminton journey has been about making the most of opportunities and the support she’s had along the way.

Yanxi started playing badminton at a young age and has steadily progressed through the junior ranks, collecting junior titles and now competing on the senior stage. At just 16 years old, she is representing New Zealand at the VICTOR Oceania Women’s Team Championships. Being identified as an emerging talent and supported by Badminton Oceania has been an important part of her development.

“The support truly means a lot to me as it shows what they believe I can achieve which motivates me to reach higher”

One of the most impactful experiences in her journey comes through training overseas. Yanxi has been spending time training at Banthongyord Badminton School in Thailand, where she is exposed to new environments and training intensities.

“I trained there for around 2 months and it was a really good and refreshing experience as there not only are Thai players but also people from all around the world coming to train at BTY and (mostly) everyone’s level is high so the training intensity and environment is higher, pushing everyone to work hard and smart. The training culture is also very nice as all the players are like a family to each other and all encourage each other to keep going.”

As she heads back home, Yanxi is bringing back a clearer understanding of what is required to continue improving.

“This experience has influenced my approach to badminton by realizing how much good strategic thinking and ability to adjust quickly can make a difference in players levels during games as everyone is all physically strong and fast so it is very important.”

“I have learned that in a new environment I need to be independent and remind myself of the correct technique etc. And I can’t always rely on the coach to tell me.

During challenging periods, Yanxi stays motivated by reconnecting with her passion for the sport.

“Reminding myself of why I play this sport and setting goals for myself motivates me to stay committed.”

She is quick to acknowledge the people who have supported her throughout her journey.

“My parents!, North Harbour, Badminton New Zealand, coaches, Badminton Oceania, and Li-Ning. I would also like to thank all the people that support and cheer for me as well as the people that always encourage me to be a better person on and off court ”

Being selected for the VICTOR Oceania Team Championships is something Yanxi holds in high regard.

“I means a ton as it’s always an honor to represent New Zealand internationally and have a chance to compete alongside amazing teammates”

As she continues to gain experience and opportunities, Yanxi remains grateful and focused on making the most of each step in her development. We look forward to seeing Yanxi compete at the VICTOR Oceania Championships Individual and Team events.
