New Zealand’s rising badminton stars Amy Wang and Tony Yu are currently competing at the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games, representing New Zealand on one of the biggest stages available to young athletes anywhere in the world. The pair are contesting the women's and men's singles events as the badminton competition, alongside 18 athletes representing New Zealand across 12 sports
For both athletes, reaching Dakar is the culmination of years of commitment, hard work and success through New Zealand's performance pathway. Now wearing the silver fern on the Olympic stage, Wang and Yu have the opportunity to test themselves against international opposition while experiencing the unique atmosphere of the Youth Olympic Games.
Wang arrives in Dakar following a standout season. The North Harbour player claimed titles at both the North Harbour and Auckland Under-19 Opens and reached the semi-finals of the 2026 Oceania Championships. Alongside her domestic success, she has continued to broaden her international experience through training and competition opportunities in Thailand, China and Japan.
Ahead of the Games, Wang spoke about the significance of the opportunity.
"I was overjoyed because I have never participated in an event as big as this."
"I'm looking forward to meeting new people, making friends, and experiencing new environments."
Yu has also earned his place through consistent performances across the national junior circuit and major selection events. The North Harbour athlete sees the Games as both a privilege and an important step in his development.
"There are so many strong athletes in New Zealand and the selection process was very competitive, so I feel very grateful for the opportunity."
"I want to make the most of this opportunity, represent New Zealand with pride, and continue to learn and improve."
Prior to the team's departure, Martin Andrew, Badminton New Zealand's Performance Manager, expressed confidence in both athletes and the opportunity the Games presents.
"I have no doubt that both Amy and Tony will represent New Zealand well with passion and quality as they strive for high level performances. The Youth Olympic Games gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their future ability to achieve on the world stage."
As Amy Wang and Tony Yu take to the courts in Dakar, they carry with them the support of the New Zealand badminton community and the opportunity to inspire the next generation of players back home.
Good luck Amy and Tony!
